I think a D2 S8 would be a lovely replacement for my E46. Now, if I can just convince my wife that I should purchase another decade-old German car for $11k...

As I’ve had a D2 A8L for a while now... be prepared for some non-working electrics, leaking sunroofs/clogged sunroof drains and clogged evaporator drains. All fixable. Well, I happened to have a chain tensioner go bad too... but otherwise.

Love the S8, mainly because... Ronin.

That, and I would think a D2 is more reliable than the V10 model that came out later.

Yea V10 and reliable are rarely found in the same place at the same time.

“I should purchase another decade-old German car for $11k...”

You do know how that sounds to sane people right?

You should do it btw.

We had a V10 Ford F350 single cab with a 6-speed manual at my old job... that thing was awesome. Slightly different animal than an S8 considering its features included a straight vinyl bench, hand-crank windows and AM/FM radio only (with 5 presets!). They still have it and I want to buy it when they get rid of it. What a beast. It has a nice new flatbed on it now, because the stock bed rotted away and nearly fell off. What were we talking about again?

Funny I almost mentioned the Ford V10. I was not sure about the reliability, but we had a Ford van with a V10 at a furniture store that I worked at as a kid. It was a beast!

I need to see what my commute is going to be like next Summer when I change locations. If I’m just driving into Baltimore then hells yes. If I’m driving to Patuxent River every day then hells nah.

It was dead reliable. It did have its share of other issues relating to its hard life as a commercial plow truck in winter, marina boat-towing truck in summer. Exhaust leaks, spark plugs that were nearly impossible to remove due to rust, coils occasionally dying, the bed falling apart - in fact the tailgate almost fell off onto the street while I was driving it - brake lines rusting away... but the engine always started and ran awesome. The lowest gear on that transmission was super low, too - you could really start in 3rd pretty easily. The shifter read: L-1-2-3-4-OD which I found really funny. “4 speed with low and OD” aka 6 gears. Moving around in tight spaces, you didn’t need any throttle. That thing was phenomenal to plow with, too. SO much faster back and forth with a manual than with an automatic.

Transmission, timing chain, just important expensive things.

The Cadillac STS is good choice as well. And for 11k you can get 320hp and rwd/awd all day long.

It’s more of a looks thing, and seeing one race around on Ronin really did it for me too. The STS is a good looking car, and the V would be fun, but I’m just not digging it. Plus the D2 S8 is looking good around $10k for a good example.

I on the other hand am very much digging the STS. If I sell my truck this is the number one contender. I don’t have to worry about German maintenance and I get near German luxury

Just watch out for mice/squirrel nests in the engine bay. Claimed many a D2 A8/S8.
